CLUSTERING

Circularis-BioCluster:
Driving Innovation in Waste Valorisation

Circularis-BioCluster

The Circularis BioCluster is a clustering initiative created by PROMISEANG (Grant Agreement ID: 101112378), VALORISH (Grant agreement ID:101135078), and ONE EARTH (Grant Agreement ID: 101135559) projects to amplify the impact of their work through shared communication, dissemination, and technical exchange. This strategic alliance aims to maximise visibility, engage broader audiences, and foster cross-sector innovation in sustainable resource valorisation.

The Circularis BioCluster brings together three Horizon Europe-funded projects working jointly to accelerate the valorisation of bio-based residues, foster circular value chains, and boost sustainable bioproducts through technical and communication synergies.

A Shared Mission

The three projects converge around a shared mission: to demonstrate viable, scalable and sustainable bio-based solutions that valorise animal and marine biomass into high-value applications for food, feed, agriculture, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

The Circularis BioCluster centres its collaboration around a set of shared key focus areas:

Valorisation of animal and marine by-products
Developing innovative processes to transform biological residues into high-value compounds.

Biorefineries for high-value bio-based products, with a focus on:

  • Advanced fermentation techniques
  • Circular waste valorisation strategies
  • Scaling up biorefinery operations towards industrial relevance

Computational modelling and optimisation of microbial processes
Enhancing bioprocess efficiency and design through cutting-edge digital tools.

Sustainability assessment
Evaluating the economic, environmental, and social impact of circular bio-based processes and products.

Market deployment and adoption
Supporting the uptake of sustainable products in the nutraceutical, cosmetics, fertiliser, and aquaculture feed sectors.

Activities and Strategic Collaboration

  • Regular coordination meetings to share insights, and identify cross-project synergies.
  • Organisation of workshops and webinars to facilitate knowledge exchange and disseminate project results and best practices.
  • Cross-communication campaigns via social media, websites, and newsletters to enhance visibility and promote joint messages.
  • Technical collaboration on specific areas, including fermentation processes, computational modelling, and biorefinery scale-up.
  • Joint development of policy briefs and recommendations to inform sustainable bioeconomy strategies.
  • Collaborative scientific publications that reflect the interdisciplinary nature and shared goals of the cluster.
  • Joint participation in scientific and industry events to engage stakeholders, showcase results, and foster new partnerships.

This cooperative approach ensures a stronger engagement across EU and global bioeconomy communities.

Cluster Members

ONE EARTH

ONE EARTH is building a self-reinforcing circular economy model by connecting marine and terrestrial biomass valorisation. The project transforms residual animal-based biomass into sustainable products for sectors such as nutraceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, and aquaculture — bridging circularity across ecosystems and industries.

VALORISH

VALORISH is designing and validating an innovative circular biorefinery that converts fish industry by-products into high-value compounds like protein hydrolysates and fish oil. Through the integration of advanced computational tools and sustainability assessments, the project paves the way for a zero-waste approach to bio-based production.

PROMISEANG

PROMISEANG explores the untapped potential of underexploited marine resources, such as invertebrate discards and macroalgae, to develop novel microbial proteins through fermentation. By demonstrating an efficient and scalable biorefinery model, the project contributes to a sustainable protein supply chain for food, feed, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical applications.

FUNDING

The Circularis BioCluster is supported under the Horizon Europe framework, through highly complementary topics that reflect the shared ambition of advancing sustainable, bio-based solutions:

HORIZON-CL6-2023-CircBio-02-3 (two-stage):
Non-plant biomass feedstock for industrial applications – Supporting technologies and processes that convert non-lignocellulosic biomass and waste into bio-based chemicals, materials and products, while promoting cascading valorisation of biological resources.

HORIZON-JU-CBE-2022-R-04:
Proteins from alternative and unconventional sources – Focusing on the development of innovative, sustainable protein production methods from novel biological inputs to reduce environmental impact and enhance European bioeconomy resilience.
